Michael Newman, the *Baywatch* actor who was a lifeguard and iron man in real-life, has passed away.

His family confirmed the news on [social media](https://www.instagram.com/p/DBcOLgXTLTG/?img%5Findex=1&ref=celebritykind.ghost.io) sharing he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after living with Parkinson’s disease:

"True to his spirit, he defied all expectations and stayed with us far longer than the doctors anticipated, showing us once again his remarkable strength and tenacity. We’re comforted by the fact that we got our goodbyes in, surrounded by friends and family. We're honoured to have caught another glimpse of the man he used to be before this disease, which was so clear through all the stories you have shared. He was a hero to so many."

They added that he’s now “off on his next adventure, sailing the Caribbean and riding the wave of a lifetime, finally free from his burdens of his illness.”

Newman appeared in over 100 episodes of *Baywatch.* He started off doing stunts in the water and offering tips to the show’s writers about rescue scenes before becoming a series regular. He was the only cast member who was an actual lifeguard, and during the run of the show, he worked as a firefighter for LA County too.

Fellow *Baywatch* star **David Hasselhoff** shared a brief message on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/DBcrieWOK49/?ref=celebritykind.ghost.io), recalling Michael's talent:

"Newman was a warrior....he literally saved my life at least 4 times. He did the transfer from the scarab to jet skis several times perfectly. What an amazing man. He was never afraid of the water."

**Jaason Simmons** who played Logan Fowler on the show, also shared some heartfelt [words](https://www.instagram.com/p/DBe-wD1SvNV/?ref=celebritykind.ghost.io):

"Without Michael Newman, training and mentoring us, there is no Baywatch, just a crappier version of ourselves. He made us strive and believe we could do anything… and so we did."

Michael's family will be organising a Paddle Out Memorial for him in coming weeks and are urging fans in the meantime to “take a swim, a paddle or a beach run in his memory - he’ll be with you there.”

He was 67.
