**BTS** band member **Jin** is celebrating the end of his military service in South Korea.

The K-pop star was discharged from the army this week after 18-months of mandatory attendance and will take part in his first public event soon - a hugging marathon! Yes, you read that correctly.

Jin will join 1,000 fans at the BTS FESTA in Seoul on Thursday. Each lucky fan was picked in a raffle - and he'll be hugging them *all.* There's talk he will likely perform a few songs too.

In a livestream today, he said, "Thank you for waiting for me. I love you. I will try to express my feelings tomorrow."

The 31-year-old artist is the first of BTS' seven members to complete his military duty. In 2022 the band announced a temporary break so the singers could pursue solo careers. And soon after that it was revealed the singers would be serving in the military following a long, national debate over whether they should receive an exemption due to their contributions to South Korea's economy.

“As each individual embarks on solo endeavours, it’s the perfect time and the members of BTS are honoured to serve,” Big Hit Music said at the time.

“Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans.”

Under South Korean law, all able-bodied men between 18 and 35 must serve in the military for at least 18 months (as per [*Forbes*](https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2022/10/17/members-of-bts-will-fulfill-their-mandatory-military-service-requirement-and-reunite-in-2025/?ref=celebritykind.ghost.io)*)*. There have been cases where notable figures have received exemptions such as Seong-jin Cho, who was the first Korean pianist to win the International Chopin Piano Competition.

The band is expected to regroup in 2025.
