**Greta Gerwig** is the Director of the Year!

The Palm Springs International Film Awards, which will be held on January 4, 2024, have announced Greta will be recognised for her record-breaking *Barbie* film.

"Greta Gerwig has brought us the cinematic experience of the year with *Barbie,* the perfect blend of comedy, emotion and adventure that has both entertained and resonated with audiences, becoming a cultural touchstone around the world," Festival Chairman Nachhattar Sing Chandi said.

"Gerwig is a masterful filmmaker, and her vision is brought to life so vividly by both the script she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, and by her clear and singular collaboration with her extraordinary crafts team, whose visuals are matched only by the outstanding performances delivered by Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and the entire cast. It is our honour to present the Director of the Year Award to Greta Gerwig."

*Barbie* was released globally in July this year, pre SAG-AFTRA strikes. It earned US$337 million worldwide in its opening weekend alone - the biggest box office debut of 2023, and the biggest box office figures for a female director in history.

Past recipients of the award include Quentin Tarantino for his film *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,* Chloé Zhao for *Nomadland* and Steve McQueenfor *12 Years a Slave.*

Greta is already an Oscar-nominated director and writer. Her last film, *Little Women,* starring Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, was nominated for six Oscars and five BAFTAs, while her debut film *Ladybird* was nominated for five Oscars too.

So could Greta be on the path to even more nominations with *Barbie?* It certainly seems like it! Interestingly, the Palm Springs International Film Festival and its accompanying awards are known as the first stop on the campaign trail for the Oscars.
