A post-mortem examination found a high concentration of ketamine in his system. Drowning was also listed as a factor contributing to his death. People close to Matthew said he'd been receiving ketamine infusion therapy (a treatment for depression and anxiety), however the medical examiner found his last therapy session had taken place a week prior to his death and the levels of ketamine in his body at the time of his death were extremely high - something didn't add up. Official statements from the police following today's arrests say authorities have uncovered a "broad underground criminal network" of drug suppliers. Speaking at a news conference, US Attorney Martin Estrada said, "These defendants took advantage of Mr Perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. They knew what they were doing was risking great danger to Mr Perry, but they did it anyway." Three of the five charged have pleaded guilty to drug-related offences. In 2022, Matthew released his book titled *Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir,* which powerfully opened with the line, “Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.” In it, he spoke of his struggles with addiction as well as his commitment to sobriety, and his hopes of starting a family. He also shared how he wanted to be remembered after his death: “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing that’s mentioned – I want helping others to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that. Addiction is far too powerful for anyone to defeat alone. But together, one day at a time, we can beat it down.” Matthew dedicated the later years of his life helping people struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. He transformed his former Malibu home into The Perry House to do so, advocated for rehabilitation-focused sentencing over prison terms for non-violent drug offenders and received the Champion of Recovery Award for his advocacy from the White House in 2013\. Beyond that, he wrote *The End of Longing,* a play exploring the challenges of addiction, and used his 2022 book tour to help de-stigmatise the disease so others would know they’re not alone. *(Feature Image Credit: Matthew Perry photo by s\_bukley/Shutterstock.com)* --- ##### **Read More:** https://celebritykind.ghost.io/content/files/2026/09/matt-leblanc-tribute-for-matthew-perry-1.html https://celebritykind.ghost.io/content/files/2026/09/jennifer-aniston-shares-her-deep-love-for-late-friend-matthew-perry-1.html https://celebritykind.ghost.io/content/files/2026/09/lisa-kudrow-thanks-matthew-perry-for-his-open-heart-brilliance-humour-1.html https://celebritykind.ghost.io/content/files/2026/09/matthew-perry-foundation-1.html
