, Big news from the DC Universe - Milly Alcock has been cast as the new Supergirl!

While there's been lots of speculation about who might be getting the role, filmmaker and DC boss James Gunn confirmed the *House of the Dragon* star had scored the role when he reposted a headline on social media.

"This one is true," he wrote on Threads. "Welcome to the DCU, Milly Alcock!"

Similarly, he shared a message on his official [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/C2s%5FDqNvqHL/?ref=celebritykind.ghost.io) account describing Milly as "a fantastically talented young actor." He added, "I'm incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon, but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl."

Milly catapulted to global stardom with her portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the *Game of Thrones* spinoff. The 23-year-old Aussie actor is also known for her roles in *Upright, Pine Gap* and *Fighting Season.*

*Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* will follow the release of *Superman: Legacy* which stars David Corenswet in the title role, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Supergirl or Kara Zor-El first appeared in a 1959 edition of *Action Comics* as the cousin of Clark Kent. It wasn't until 1962 we began to see more of her and this continued right up until the mid-80s (where she was sadly killed off - but don't worry, she was brought back to life in later years.)

The character has been portrayed by a number of talented women over the years including Helen Slater in the original 1984 *Supergirl* film, Laura Vandervoort in the *Smallville* series, Melissa Benoist in the *Supergirl* series and Sasha Calle in the more recent *The Flash* film.
