# Salma Hayek Celebrates "Extraordinary" Penélope Cruz on Her 50th Birthday

**Penélope Cruz** is marking her 50th birthday and long-time friend **Salma Hayek** is celebrating the milestone with a sweet message!

Taking to [Instagram,](https://www.instagram.com/p/C6UahUXITx3/?img%5Findex=1&ref=celebritykind.ghost.io) Salma shared a carousel of photos of the two of them over the years - on red carpets, at awards shows and having fun at home.

"Happy Birthday Penélope," Salma begins. "Thank you God for sending to Earth a special number of years ago an angel. All of us who've crossed paths with her know that she's made our life crazy, exciting, meaningful, inspiring and taught us the meaning of solidarity and loyalty with so much love."

She continued, "Thank you, to you Penélope, for the little angels that you've mothered into this world. You are an extraordinary woman, and every year even more."

*Extraordinary indeed*. Penélope has won multiple awards including the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2009 for her role in *Vicky Cristina Barcelona.*

The Hollywood star turned 50 on April 28.

The two women, both trailblazers who diversified Hollywood in the 90s with their talent, have been friends for decades. Though they first connected over the phone while Penélope lived in Spain, eventually they did meet in person:

"I was coming here for two months and I didn't know anyone here," Penélope said during an appearance on [*The Ellen DeGeneres Show*](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=4668637899879772) in 2022\. "And she picked me up (from the airport) and said 'You're not going to the hotel. You're coming to my house because this is hard at the beginning and you're going to feel very lonely."

Not only did Penélope stay at Salma's house but she stayed in her room too: "In the middle of the night, she said I was holding her hand because I was afraid, I was dreaming, I don't know."

She added, "That's why now we're like sisters."
