# Shakira & Gerard Piqué Announce Their Separation

**Shakira** and **Gerard Piqué** have announced they've separated.

A joint statement from the singer and soccer star (as witnessed and shared by [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/shakira-gerard-pique-confirm-they-are-separate-2022-06-04/?ref=celebritykind.ghost.io) from Shakira's PR team) reads:

"We regret to confirm that we are parting ways. For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

The couple had been together since 2011 after meeting during filming of Shakira's World Cup song "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" in 2010, but never married.

They share two sons, 9-year-old Milan and 7-year-old Sasha.

Just hours before the announcement, Shakira took to Twitter to explain why she'd been seen in an ambulance recently.

"I just wanted to let you know that those photos are from last weekend (the 28th), when my dad unfortunately had a bad fall and I accompanied him in an ambulance where he is recovering now."
