The nominations for the 2021 Golden Globes are out and for the first time in the awards' 78 year history, women are dominating the Best Director category!

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association which is the voting body behind the show, has nominated **Chloé Zhao** for her work on *Nomadland,* **Emerald Fennell** for *Promising Young Woman* and **Regina King** for *One Night in Miami.*

"OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDD," Ms Fennell tweeted after learning about her nomination.

They are recognised alongside **Aaron Sorkin**for *The Trial of the Chicago 7* and **David Fincher**for *Mank.*

Only five other female directors have *ever* been nominated in the category - **Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, Ava DuVernay, Kathryn Bigelow** and **Barbra Streisand.**

And only one woman has *ever* won the category - that being Ms Streisand way back in the 80s for the film *Yentl.* (She was also nominated again in 1992 for *The Prince of Tides.)*

You might remember actress **Natalie Portman** made sure we all noticed the lack of recognition for female directors when she took to the stage at the 2018 Golden Globes to announce the Best Director winner.

"And here are the all male nominees," she said.

Boom.

Ms Streisand also took to Twitter to share her views at the time:

"In my humble opinion, I was very disappointed that director Dee Rees and her powerful film @mudboundmovie wasn't even nominated. I also would have liked to see director @PattyJenks and her film @WonderWomanFilm recognised because it shows how strong women can be, not only as characters but also at the box office. The three highest-grossing films last year were all carried by women."

Here's to....*some* progress?
