Friends and mentors of late cinematographer, wife and mum Halyna Hutchins have found a beautiful way to honour her memory.

They've creating a scholarship through the American Film Institute (AFI) where Halyna studied, to support other aspiring female cinematographers.

Halyna's husband Matt Hutchins shared the news on Twitter, urging "anyone seeking to honour her memory" to give to the Halyna Hutchins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Halyna was tragically killed by a prop firearm on the set of her movie "Rust" in New Mexico this week. The incident also left director Joel Souza in hospital with injuries.

Earlier, Matt posted a short message following his wife's death describing her as a woman who inspired many with her "passion and vision."

"Her legacy is too meaningful to encapsulate in words," he wrote.

"Our loss is enormous."
