Hollywood legend, animal activist and LGBTQ+ ally Betty White has passed away aged 99, just weeks before her 100th birthday.

Betty's agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed the sad news in a statement to People magazine:

"Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever. I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don't think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again."

No cause of death was cited.

Betty had a career spanning more than eight decades but was best known for playing man-crazy TV hostess Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and ditzy but loveable housemate Rose Nyland on The Golden Girls.

She was due to celebrate her 100th birthday on January 17 with some of her famous friends including Ryan Reynolds, Jimmy Kimmel, Tina Fey and Clint Eastwood with a TV special marking the occasion.
