Helena Christensen is using her platform to share an important message ahead of World Refugee Day on June 20.

The supermodel and photographer who's also a global UNHCR Ambassador is highlighting the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic on refugees around the world.

"They have already experienced losing their homes and livelihoods and many, their loved ones too," she writes in a social media post.

"Now they are being affected by the global pandemic. And this could end with catastrophic results!" Helena continues.

"The coronavirus is closing in on the world's refugee camps where many live in extremely crowded conditions with limited access to clean water, soap and protective masks."

In a video posted to her Instagram, Helena explains that "social distancing is almost impossible and maintaining good hygiene is challenging."

According to the UNHCR, there are currently over 79.5 million people who have been forced to flee their homes - 26 million are refugees.

Helena Christensen has been supporting the UNHCR's work since 2015 and was made a Global Ambassador in June 2019. She has visited refugee camps in Jordan and Rwanda and met with people who've been internally displaced in Ukraine.
