Chadwick Boseman's alma mater, Howard University, is honouring the late actor with a scholarship in his name.

It's called the Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship, and it's a $5.4 million fund created with streaming platform Netflix and the support of Boseman's wife, Simone Ledward-Boseman, which will help incoming College of Fine Arts students cover the full cost of their tuition - that's four whole years, free!

"It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honour of alumnus Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continue to inspire," University President Dr Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a

statement.

"This scholarship embodies Chadwick's love for Howard, his passion for storytelling and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students."

The University has already named the re-established College of Fine Arts after the Black Panther actor who graduated from Howard in 2000 with a bachelor of arts in directing.

Ms Ledward-Boseman also shared a statement about the scholarship and how it represents so much of what her late husband stood for:

"Many exemplary artists are not afforded the opportunity to pursue higher learning. We hope to support as many students as possible by removing the financial barrier to education. This endowment represents Chad's devotion to the craft, his compassion for others and his desire to support future storytellers."

According to the University, the scholarship will be given to students in the dramatic arts who exemplify Boseman's values of empathy, passion, respect, a drive for excellence and leadership.

The inaugural class of awardees have already been announced. They include Sarah Long, a freshman in musical theatre, Shawn Smith, a sophomore studying acting, Janee' Ferguson, a junior in theatre arts administration and senior Deirdre Dunkin who studies dance:

Boseman sadly passed away from colon cancer last year. He was 43.
