Like many of us, Idris Elba is tired of internet trolls hiding behind their fake online names. So he's calling on social media platforms to do something about it.

The Hollywood superstar shared a message on his Instagram page explaining that verifying every user could make the digital space a safer one - and one that holds people accountable for their words and actions:

"People in the public eye get verified on social media, (symbolised by a blue tick), the process of verification requires them to prove their IDENTITY, so everyone knows WHO is speaking," he begins.

"SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES SHOULD MAKE THIS MANDATORY FOR ALL USERS," he adds before likening the platforms to "boarding a plane and not having to show I.D."

"THAT would never happen. If cowards are being supported by a veil of privacy and secrecy, then social media is not a safe space. It is an aeroplane that allows travellers to wear balaclavas. If cowards want to spout racial rhetoric then say it with your name, not your username."

And he's not the only one who feels this way.

An online petition calling on the UK government to make verified ID a requirement for opening a social media account has amassed over 686,000 signatures so far.

As it stands, Instagram users can request verification for their account by submitting a licence, passport or other government-issued I.D. But not everyone is eligible. So unless you're a celebrity or a prominent figure of some sort, you don't get the tick.
