Bernadette Belle Wu Ong, the reigning Miss Singapore, has made a powerful statement at this year's Miss Universe pageant, wearing a dress with the words "Stop Asian Hate."

The outfit, designed by Arwin Meriales and hand painted by Paulo Espinosa, is a take on Singapore's national flag featuring red and white sleeves, a bodysuit and a long train.

Sharing her look on Instagram, Miss Singapore writes: "What is this platform for if I can't use it to send a strong message of resistance against prejudice and violence!"

She also thanked the pageant for giving her the opportunity to make her statement.

Her designer, Meriales also shared a statement on social media:

"What made me say yes? It's not just a national costume. It's a statement and protest to stop Asian hate. Who wouldn't want to be a part of such a cause?"

This year's Miss Universe crown went to Andrea Meza of Mexico.
