There's a special meaning behind the dress Naomi Osaka wore to the 2021 Met Gala.

Keeping with the night's theme, "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," the tennis superstar donned a custom Louis Vuitton gown to pay tribute to the immigrants who make up the country.

It was designed by the label's creative director Nicolas Ghesquière in collaboration with fellow tennis player and Naomi's own sister, Mari Osaka!

"When we first heard of the theme 'American' we thought of immigrants: they are what created America from the start and the blend of so many cultures and languages is what makes this country unique," Mari explains on Instagram.

"This dress and look is a representation of that as a blend of both our Japanese and Haitian roots. From the ruffles derived from Haitian Quadrille dress to the obi of a Japanese kimono."

If you look closely, you'll notice the gown features a detailed purple and turquoise print featuring koi fish, a black ruffled cape and a vibrant red belt.

The dress is ultimately a reflection of the very duality of cultures that define what is "American" for Naomi and Mari.

"The mix of cultures is something to be celebrated and enjoyed," Mari adds.

And we couldn't agree more!
