Oprah Winfrey has announced that November 3 which is Election Day in the U.S., will be a company holiday at the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The media queen and philanthropist made the announcement on her social media pages on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women in America the right to vote - well, white women.

"And while we honour this historic milestone, we also have to acknowledge that the right was not afforded to Black women," Oprah says.

"We also have to acknowledge that the fight continues to this day because there's still so many obstacles that African American women and all Americans have to overcome just to exercise our very right to vote," she continues.

Oprah explains that making Election Day a company holiday gives everyone the time and space they'll need to vote while staying safe during the pandemic and volunteer where they can.

"It is just one small step we can all take to create change and demonstrate that Black Lives Matter, to ensure America can and will be a more perfect union."

She's also challenging other companies to do the same "because this might be the most important election of our lives."
