Russell Crowe has picked up a Golden Globe for his role as former Fox News chief Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice - and he's used his moment in the spotlight to remind the world that Australia is on fire.

Except he wasn't actually in the spotlight at all.

The Hollywood star skipped the awards ceremony, opting to stay in Australia instead and had Jennifer Aniston read out his message on stage:

"Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way we all have a future. Thank you."

Russell posted a video on social media, after his win, of the supplies in a firetruck preparing to fight spot fires. Fire hoses, blankets and masks can be seen in the video before Russell zooms in on his shiny Golden Globe award sitting in the front seat - "All you need for fighting fires," he jokes.

Last month, the actor sold an old Rabbitoh's cap on Twitter, generating more than $400,000 for the fire services across the country.
