Sir Anthony Hopkins is marking 45 years of sobriety today and he has a special message to share for others who may be battling addiction.

In a post on Instagram, the Oscar-winning star begins by describing the moment that changed his life:

"45 years ago today, I had a wake-up call," he says.

"I was heading for disaster, drinking myself to death. I'm not preaching but I got a message, a little thought said 'Do you want to live or die?' and I said, 'I want to live.' And suddenly the relief came and my life has been amazing."

The 82-year-old (who is turning 83 tomorrow, on New Year's Eve!) admits it hasn't all been smooth sailing of course:

"I may have off days and little bits of doubt and all that but all in all, I say hang in there. Today is the tomorrow you were so worried about yesterday," he continues.

"You young people, don't give up. Just keep in there, just keep fighting. Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid. That's sustained me through my life. And that's all I've got to say and happy new year.

"Bravo, Anthony. I proudly stand behind you," commented fellow actor Leslie Jordan, while Maureen McCormick who starred as Marcia on The Brady Bunch tweeted, "Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful message! Congratulations! 40 years for me!"
