For decades, Sir Elton John has been on a mission to support people with HIV and AIDS. And now, during the coronavirus pandemic, he's continuing to do just that.

The music icon has announced that his non-profit organisation, the Elton John AIDS Foundation is launching a $1 million COVID-19 Emergency Fund to benefit those affected by HIV.

"For almost 30 years, my foundation has prioritised the most vulnerable people to HIV to end the AIDS epidemic and we're committed to this during the COVID-19 crisis too," he says in a video posted to social media.

The singer explains that "distributing medicine, testing and preventive treatment is not as simple as it was a few weeks ago," which is where he's hoping his emergency fund can help out.

"Our new COVID-19 emergency fund will help frontline partners to prepare for and respond to the pandemic and its effects on HIV prevention and care for the most marginalised communities," he continues.

"We must keep up momentum or else the results could be disastrous."
