The nominees for the 2025 Oscars have been announced - and we have a list of the history-makers, the ones shattering glass ceilings and the just-plain-awesome!
1.Karla Sofía Gascón

'Emilia Pérez', a musical thriller starring Karla Sofía Gascòn and Selena Gomez, leads the pack this year with 13 nominations. That's an all-time record for a non-English-language film. But it's Karla that everyone is talking about - she is the first openly trans actress to ever be nominated for an Oscar!
Karla is vying for Best Actress against Cynthia Erivo for 'Wicked', Mikey Madison for 'Anora', Demi Moore for 'The Substance' and Fernanda Torres for 'I'm Still Here'.
2. Coralie Fargeat

Coralie Fargeat, whose film ‘The Substance’ is all about the pressures women face in Hollywood, is nominated for Best Director. She is the only woman nominated this year and the ninth - I repeat, NINTH - woman to ever be nominated in the category since the Oscars started in 1929!
Fun Fact: the first woman who received an Oscar nomination in this category was Italian director Lina Wermüller back in 1977. She was recognised for her film 'Seven Beauties' but lost to John G. Avidsen for 'Rocky'.
3. Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia. Brilliant Cynthia. She is up for Best Actress for her role as Elphaba in ‘Wicked’ - and if she wins, she will become the youngest to achieve EGOT status - ie, having an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. (She's 38 by the way.)

4. Fernanda Torres

'I’m Still Here' star Fernanda Torres is nominated in the Best Actress category, making her the second Brazilian in history to be nominated for the award. Her mother, Fernanda Montenegro was the first, nominated in 1999!
5. Timothée Chalamet

And an interesting one about 29-year-old Monsieur Chalamet. According to film historian Mark Harris on Bluesky, Timothée, who is up for Best Actor for his role in 'A Complete Unknown', is the youngest two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee since James Dean was posthumously nominated in the 50s.
Awesome, huh?
What’s WILD about this is that there are only a handful of men under 30 who have EVER received nominations whereas women under 30? Nominated all the time! A reflection of the system, perhaps?
