Humanitarian chef José Andrés is one of eight distinguished change-makers to receive an honorary doctorate from Harvard University today.

The World Central Kitchen founder who couldn't attend the ceremony in person as he's been busy co-ordinating and distributing over 20 million (yes, million!) meals to people fleeing war-torn Ukraine, was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters - and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Sharing a message on Instagram, Andrés responded to the honour:

"I'm humbled to receive an honorary degree from Harvard, who let me create the Science + Cooking class with my mentor @ferranadria despite never finishing high school! I'm thankful for my supportive family and to @wckitchen @dccentralkitchen for giving cooks like me an opportunity to serve."

This isn't the first time the famous chef has been bestowed with a special honour from a university. He's also received honorary doctorates in 2014 from George Washington University and in 2018 from Tufts University.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, writer and political activist Gloria Steinem and microbiologist Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum were also among those to receive honorary doctorates from Harvard today.
