There's a new member of the Sussex family!

The Beagle Freedom Project (BFP), a nonprofit based in Hollywood, working to end the exploitation of animals through rescue projects, campaigns and new legislation, has revealed Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have adopted 7-year-old Mamma Mia, one of their rescued beagles.

"Mia has found her forever fairytale home with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex!" a message on the organisation's website reads.

"Earlier this month, the royal couple visited BFP to adopt a pup. The Duchess expressed that she’s long supported BFP and wanted to give a loving home to an Envigo survivor, preferably an older dog in need. After playing with sweet Mamma Mia, they knew she was the one!"

According to the LA Times who spoke with the BFP's Shannon Keith, Mamma Mia and her eight puppies were among 4,000 beagles rescued from a testing lab run by medical research company Envigo in Virginia which shut down following a federal lawsuit accusing it of failing to meet minimum animal welfare standards.

"The Duchess called me personally," Keith tells the publication. "She calls on my cell with no caller ID and says, 'Hey Shannon, this is Meghan.' We talked for 30 minutes."

The Beagle Freedom Project also takes on a variety of other animals including rabbits, cats and horses.
