Superstar, philanthropist and mama-to-be Rihanna is marking a special day - her very first "National Heroes Day" in her home country of Barbados, as an actual national hero!

You might remember, Barbados became a republic in November last year and one of the first things Prime Minister Mia Mottley did was to declare RiRi the island's 11th official national hero. Mottley described the superstar as someone who has exemplified “visionary and pioneering leadership” as well as “extraordinary achievement.”

Rihanna accepted the honour of course and was given an enormous medal during Independence Day celebrations, presented to her by the country's first President - Dame Sandra Mason.

In a post on Instagram, RiRi shared some throwbacks from last year's event and expressed her gratitude for the great recognition:

"What an absolute honour to be amongst such great men and women who have come before me and held this title in commitment to our nation! I will forever cherish these memories and continue to represent the Bajan people and my home Barbados to the fullest!!"She didn't specify what she's up to today exactly or how she's celebrating the occasion, but being heavily pregnant and all, we hope it involves lots of relaxing on the couch with her feet up!Rihanna was originally made a Cultural Ambassador for the country in 2008 and a decade later became the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, a role that’s involved promoting education, tourism and investment in the country.

Over the years, she has been involved in many philanthropic efforts to support the people of Barbados  including the funding of an oncology unit in honour of her late grandmother Clara Braithewaite and donating equipment such as tablets to support the education of school students.
