Sir Paul McCartney Calls for Rescue of Abused Elephant in India

Table of Contents

Sir Paul McCartney is urging the Indian government to help save an elephant after animal rights group PETA shared footage of her suffering in captivity.

Jeymalyatha is being kept at a temple in Tamil Nadu, India and inspectors from PETA say the elephant is being chained, beaten and has infected feet from spending too much time on concrete.

In a letter addressed to Bhupender Yadav, the country's Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Sir Paul pleads for Jeymalyatha's release, saying she has "suffered more than enough."

"The videos showing Jeymalyatha being controlled with weapons, and screaming as she is beaten by various trainers is heartbreaking, but equally as heartbreaking is that this social, intelligent animal is still being forced to live in solitary confinement, on concrete, nearly constantly in chains, under the control of those she can only fear."

Sir Paul ends his letter asking for Jeymaluatha "to spend the rest of her time on this Earth... rehabilitating, and with others of her kind."

According to PETA, Sir Paul isn't the only celebrity throwing his support behind the rescue. A long list of stars including Madhuri Dixit, Arjun Rampal and Raveena Tandon have taken to social media to call for Jeymalyatha's release.
