Ruth E. Carter is making history once again!

The Wakanda Forever costume designer has become the first Black woman to win two Oscars after taking home the statuette for Best Costume Design at the 95th Annual Academy Awards.

In 2019, she made history for becoming the first Black woman to win Best Costume Design for her work on the original Black Panther movie.

During her acceptance speech, Ms. Carter dedicated the award to her mother, who recently passed away at the age of 101 and thanked the industry for recognising the power of Black women:

“Thank you for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endures. She loves. She overcomes. She is every woman in this film. She is my mother. This past week Mable Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment."

She added that she hopes Black Panther star, the late and great Chadwick Boseman ,will "take care" of her mother up above before thanking her entire team, acknowledging that together they are "reshaping how culture is represented."
