The very first trailer for Wonka is finally here!
With Timothée Chalamet in the title role, the clip introduces us to an enchanting, young version of Willy Wonka, the eccentric chocolate mogul from Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The story takes place before he opens his extraordinary factory and meets the Oompa-Loompas, when Wonka has big dreams and a burning desire to achieve them.
"I've spent the past seven years perfecting my craft," Wonka says in the video. "You see I'm something of a magician, inventor and chocolate maker. So quiet up and listen down. No scratch that and reverse it."
"Based on the extraordinary character at the centre of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, Wonka tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today," the synopsis reads.
The movie, directed by BAFTA nominee Paul King (who was behind Paddington and The Mighty Boosh) has an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Rowan Atkinson Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Natasha Rothwell and more. It will be released on December 14, 2023.
Wonka's character has been played in the past by Gene Wilder (in 1971) and Johnny Depp (in 2005). This will be the first time a movie explores his youth and the lead up to his chocolate empire!
