Naomi Osaka has pledged to donate any prize money she wins from an upcoming tennis tournament to help the people of Haiti.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the country on August 14, killing over 1,000 people as well as leaving hundreds injured and missing, and reducing buildings to rubble. (You can learn more about the current situation HERE.)

Naomi, whose father is Haitian, shared a statement on social media describing how she hopes to help:

"Really hurts to see all the devastation that's going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can't catch a break," she begins.

"I'm about to play a tournament this week and I'll give all the prize money to relief efforts for Haiti. I know our ancestors blood is strong. We'll keep rising."

The prize pool for the upcoming WTA tour in Cincinnati she speaks of is $US2.9million and if Naomi wins, she would be able to donate approximately $255,000 to relief efforts.
